The Canon imagePROGRAF iPF9000 is currently the newest wide format printer released by Canon. It boasts a 60" printable width, which specifically exploits the weakness of Epson's highly coveted printer line. Currently, Epson holds the most market share in the fine art and photography market segments with the Epson 9800, Epson 7800, and Epson 4800 printers.
The Canon ipf9000 also differentiates itself with its Lucia 12 color ink system. According to Canon, the Lucia inks will deliver a much wider color gamut than the current 8-color Ultrachrome ink system provided by Epson.
Furthermore, the Canon ipf9000 is much faster and is therefore very production-friendly. Printmakers can utilize the Canon ipf9000 for high volume needs without needing a substantial investment in additional wide format printers. For example, an Epson 9800 user may need almost twice as many printers as a printmaker utilizing Canon ipf9000 printers. In certain cases, the drastically improved speed of the Canon ipf9000 will allow for a higher return on investment.
All in all, the Canon ipf9000 printer is Canon's first real step into the rapidly evolving fine art and photography wide format printer segment. Although the Canon ipf9000 is an advanced printer with further technical advantages we have described, the key disadvantage is that the user base is and will continue to be very small for quite some time. This means that Canon ipf9000 support, in terms of freely searchable knowledge and icc profiles, etc., will be limited in comparison to the Epson 9800, where an extremely wide range of support and Epson icc profiles can be found with a simple Google search. Furthermore, word on the street is that Epson is already due to release their newest wide format printer, the Epson 11880 printer, which is a 64" wide format printer that is supposed to surpass the capabilities of every single wide format printer on the market today.
