Epson Stylus Pro 9800: Different Media Options

The Epson Stylus Pro 9800 is a professional grade wide format printer able to handle many different types of media up to 44 inches wide. While not a large scale production printer it is suitable for artist studios, smaller print shops, and corporate use. Many artists are and photographers are attracted by its ability to print giclee canvas. It's one of the only printers at its price point (around $5,000 retail) that is able to print on canvas and thick watercolor paper. Cut sheets and rolls can be used. It features two types of black ink, the matte black ink mode is reported to produce fantastic results with fine art papers.

The front loading paper path on the Epson Stylus Pro 9800 can even accommodate up to 1.5 mm thick posterboard. For paper on a roll, it can use 2 inch and 3 inch wide cored media. The maximum roll diameter is 4 inches for the 2 inch core type and 6 inches for the 3 inch core type rolls. It can use paper as thin as 12 lb bond to up to 1.5 mm thick.

Some of the wonderful different media options for this professional printer include 100% rag cotton velvet art paper, and canvas for giclee printing. In fact many professional artists and print shops use the Epson Stylus Pro 9800 for printing art or photos on giclee canvas.

Of course another option is a smooth fine art paper, which can be used for producing proofs, or when you want a smooth rather than matte finish on the Epson Stylus Pro 9800. Basically, any fine artist could experiment with many wonderful papers and mediums for this printer.

How to Print Borderless on an EPSON 9800


For borderless printing, the Epson print engine enlarges the image size slightly (about 5 percent or a bit less) to ensure that the image is not printed with any white edges due to paper misalignment. You can minimize the clipping by resizing your image to actual paper size (e.g., 13" x 19", 4" x 6"), and then setting Print with Preview to center the image and print it at 96% of actual size. The clipping dialog still comes up (it will whenever you are printing in the printer's defined margins), but tell it OK. You can try using 95% if there is still too much clipping.
